Oral Conscious Sedation

Bozart Family Dentistry is pleased to provide oral conscious sedation to our patients.  This is a valuable service for fearful patients, long procedures, and other situations.  Dr.Bozart has completed extensive educational courses in sedation, is an active member of Sedation DOCS and holds a North Carolina conscious sedation permit.

There are several points to understand with regards to our sedation regiment.

1. Our goal is to provide a comfortable experience for all patients in the safest manner.  The aim is to provide the appropriate dosage and sedative for each individual. This will require a physical examination before sedative administration.  Monitoring equipment will be utlitized before, during and after the procedure.

2.  Our office administers nitrous oxide and oral sedatives, but we do not give intravenous (IV) administration.  Nitrous oxide is great for lowering ones anxiety or fear, but it generally does not sedate.  Oral sedatives are great for creating conscious sedation and often are used in conjunction with nitrous oxide.  IV sedation is used for deep conscious sedation and is not administered in our office.

3.  Our sedation regiment includes various oral sedatives.  Which sedative we choose to use will be determined based on the length of the procedure, degree of fear, physical examination, and level of sedation desired.

4.  Not everyone is a candidate for sedation.  In fact, our goal is to build or restore confidence in fearful patients with the hope of providing nonsedated dental treatment in the future.

5.  Conscious sedation places the patient in a deeply relaxed state while maintaining responsiveness and normal protective reflexes.  In fact, most patients will be able to communicate needs during the treatment, but with no anxiety and have little to no memory of the appointment.

6.  All of our sedation patients will
- have a physical examination before sedation
- have time to ask us questions
- sign a consent form before treatment
- establish a companion to assist with travel to and from the appointment
- enjoy their dental experience
- tell their friends and family
